I am celebrating my birthday today, on the East Coast, far from San Diego. But will be keeping an eye on Comic-Con online.

    • July 12, 2012 at 2:34 pm

I am building a brand new bookcase, so that when A Memory of Light comes out, I’ll have a bookshelf dedicated only to The Wheel of Time.

  2. July 12, 2012 at 10:06 am

My husband and I are going to live vicariously through the internet and the couple of friends we know who are going to be at Comicon, and wish we were there, checking out the booths, awesome swag, and hoping for a glimpse of the Firefly cast! 🙂

That swag bag looks really awesome. Thanks for the giveaway! 🙂 You rock!

  3. July 12, 2012 at 10:08 am

I will be attending ye olde Renaissance Festival dressed up as a pirate! Argh, matey! Have fun at the Con 😀

Graduating! But seriously, working and writing and wishing i could be there.

  7. July 12, 2012 at 10:09 am

Instead of being at ComicCon, I’ve donated 50 hats and 4 blankets to a children’s hospital, done epic laundry, watched a ton of Dr. Who, and helped write up lesson plans to use to educate library and Techmobile patrons on how to use computers, make a story with iPad apps, or write a successful business plan. For my grand finale, I’m going to finish reading 2 books, knit myself a neckwarmer, host my Anniversary Birthday Housewarming Satanic Prom party, and run my charity knitting group.

INSTEAD of Comic Con, I will have to console myself with RE-READING the new book by Terry Goodkind. One of my ALL-TIME favorite authors. Can’t think of a better way to console myself with not being able to go to San Diego

    July 12, 2012 at 10:16 am

Inspiration’s just struck! I’ll be cramped up inside a tiny, dark little room, typing like crazy and trying to get this short story out of my head before it fades into nothingness! So while some may wander the vendor halls and hear their heroes speak, I’ll be penning a story about a man from the void with a penchant for eating demons!

  29. July 12, 2012 at 10:16 am

I am weeping softly on my keyboard as I work on a deadline instead of seeing the Winchester boys from Supernatural and the crew of Firefly, and getting massive amounts of emails from B&N as my daughter fills up her new Nook with books.

  118. July 12, 2012 at 10:37 am

I’ll be attending ConnectiCon, July 13-15 in Hartford, CT instead of attending SDCC – looking forward to this weekend, should be a good fun time with 10,000+ fans in Hartford!

  121. DdraigCoch
    July 12, 2012 at 10:37 am

In the UK so instead of being at SDCC I will be getting ready to move house, cosplaying as Sirius Black for a ‘Black Family Portrait’ with Regulus, Narcissa, Andromeda and Bellatrix, attending my local monthly cosplay meet, working on a game-accurate wig for a Xaldin cosplay, working on setting up the summer round of my biannual writing challenge (adventchallenge over on LJ if anyone is interested), stalking IKEA, and DESPRATELY trying to ignore the Union Jack swaddled excitment of the Olympics. All during one of the worst downpours we’ve had in years.

    Should be fun! …right?

  122. July 12, 2012 at 10:37 am

Alas no Comic-Con, but I will be leading a convention committee meeting for our local (Huntsville AL) sf/f con (Con*Stellation XXXI), attending a meeting of the local sf/f club (NASFA), and getting ready for a trip next weekend to LibertyCon in Chattanooga. So yeah, some fanac this weekend 🙂

  123. Strigine

I actually live in the area but am not going for financial reasons (laid off earlier this year). Instead I will plug away at wordcount for the Clarion Writeathon! Probably at Starbucks for the a/c, let’s be honest.

How am I not at Comicon?!!! I shall vent my disappointment by destroying the locust horde and continuing my re-read of WoT in anticipation of Memory of Light and harassing the admins further at Dragonmount! Fear me Guild o Geeks!!

  127. July 12, 2012 at 10:38 am

I will begin packing for the family move. I’ve already set aside the towels and tin of biscuits to ensure we’re prepared for every possibility!

This weekend will be my anniversary with my boyfriend of 3 years. My Knight in Shining Armour will be taking me out for a nice dinner together at a fancy restaurant and then going to see the play “Pirates of Penzance” at the Stratford Festival. It should be a gloriously, romantic weekend for us both, reliving the adventure of our relationship so far.

  139. July 12, 2012 at 10:40 am

Will head to Italy and brave the mountain passes in the Alps with my boyfriend on an unplanned trip! Aiming to take the greatest possible photograph of the Alps with my nikon camera and help my bf forget about his work for a few days:). Before and after this unplanned trip I’ll be working towards my goal of finishing my translation studies and becoming a well-trained translator.

  140. July 12, 2012 at 10:40 am

During the day I will be hard at work earning a living. At night I will be studying Accounting (I hate accounting). I would rather be attending COMIC CON but California is a long way from Mississippi. And thanks for the giveaway. If I win I will give the Wheel of Time books to my teenage son. So that he can start his own collection and leave mine alone.

  141. Henry
    July 12, 2012 at 10:40 am

I’ll be celebrating my birthday in style at a small music festival here!

  142. July 12, 2012 at 10:40 am

I’ve been, and will continue, to slave away over students papers in hopes to gain a little extra cash from work over the summer. In the darkest hours of night, I slip away to scarf down as much of Sanderson’s Mistborn as I can before having to return back to work after a few hours of sleep.

  143. July 12, 2012 at 10:40 am

I’ll be following the convention online and writing some reviews for the blog. I’d love to review some of the books in this bundle.

    July 12, 2012 at 10:41 am

I’ll be finishing my latest Sci-Fi novel (reading, not writing), and then playing Pathfinder … a LOT. First our regular group tonight, and then at Connecticon over the weekend. Love. Oh, and working. But you know, that’s just the side plan.

  146. Tim Cook
    July 12, 2012 at 10:41 am

I personally will be winning the Piston Cup, slaying demons, attempting to help Gru steal the shrink ray, tame a dragon, or whatever other daunting task my 15 month old son wants to do. (a.k.a. watching his favorite movies )

  147. Kevin F
    July 12, 2012 at 10:41 am

Practicing my Bouzouki and staying out of the heat while knowing SDCC is just a few hours flight away!

  148. Meg
    July 12, 2012 at 10:42 am

I may not be at Comic-Con, but I’m going to try baking my very first red velvet cake! Cooking is a lot like sci-fi and fantasy, especially the part where everything goes wrong and you need a way to fix it. 🙂

  149. Ryan
    July 12, 2012 at 10:42 am

I’ll be working today, but for my birthday gift to myself this weekend I’ll be getting my scuba certification! Scuba gear is the basis of any good sci-fi costuming.

  150. July 12, 2012 at 10:42 am

This week I am studying statistics. It’s seriously all I have been doing for the last 5 weeks of my life. There’s no time for anything else. It sucks!

  151. Sabrina John
    July 12, 2012 at 10:42 am

I am going to clean my appartment. Write Some stories. Paint pictures. And read books. After the last month which were busy I have got one week freetime. But this is truely not as awesome as the SDCC is.

I will be battling my willpower against using the True Power on Global Warming.
Also, do blind TP users still get black flecks floating across their eyeballs? Just some gobble for thought…

  153. Helen
    July 12, 2012 at 10:42 am

Though I’m mightily disappointed to miss the Comic-Con, I’m doing what’s easily the next best thing: going hiking in the earthly equivalent of Middle Earth, the Alps. It’s like the Misty Mountains minus the goblins and stone giants. Somewhere between one tiny mountain village and another, as I ride a train or stop beside a chuckling mountain stream to eat a sandwich, I’m going to start in on the Eye of the World for the first time. I’ll also pretend that all those people speaking German are actually talking in Dwarvish. On the plane flight home, I’ll watch an episode or five of Star Trek, and upon my arrival I’ll start packing for college!

  154. July 12, 2012 at 10:43 am

This weekend I’ll be working but it will be worth it. 🙂

  155. Christina Mitton
    July 12, 2012 at 10:43 am

The same thing I do every day Pinky. Work, go home, read and play video games. I’m also putting together a “Little Fears” campaign and hope to get some inspiration. Aside from that, I go to Karate Class and make a total doof of myself. Worth it tho 🙂
    #notatcomicon isn’t such a bad thing

    July 12, 2012 at 10:43 am

After having moved my sister from NY to SC and been brought low by a contagious 4 year old, I spent 2 days in bed with a cold & fever, watching Doctor Who to make myself feel better. Now that I’m left with only mass quantities of mucus, I’ll be working on building aluminum cabinet doors for a camper trailer restoration and assisting with an archeological survey (getting my Indiana Jones on while #NotAtComicCon ?)

  157. TM Fosket

I will be catching up on housework and wishing I was there…

  158. July 12, 2012 at 10:43 am

I will be the minister at a wedding on Saturday, and watching my daughter in a parade on Sunday, and the rest of my time will be spend glued to EW.com watching the comic-con coverage!

    July 12, 2012 at 10:44 am

I will be listening to the first audiobook in the Codex Alera series, Furies of Calderon, by Jim Butcher as I drive to and from work. Then at home I am doing a reread of Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn (my favorite!!) All while envying any friends who made it to ComicCon, following the news and their trips onlein, and at least look forward to GenCon and Dragon*Con next month.

  162. July 12, 2012 at 10:44 am

After finishing Towers of Midnight, I have started on Brandon Sandersons other works. This weekend, while I am #NotAtComicCon, I will be checking up on the Vin and the crew in the Mist Born trilogy!

I will be unpacking box after box from recently moving from Denver to Durango, CO. Moving is so much fun.

  164. July 12, 2012 at 10:45 am

I’ll be geeking out in a dog training direction. Tomorrow we’re getting together with two friends to see how we do on a mock up of the Canine Good Citizenship test so we can see where we stand before we start classes for it next week.

Today I’m hoping that the first 4 volumes of The Walking Dead arrive before I leave the office so I can read them over the weekend.

I’ll be taking my new wife to Wildwood, NJ to celebrate our first month of marriage together, this Friday night. After we return home I’ll be back to my umpteenth re-read of The Wheel of Time, as well as plotting the chimerical doom of my players in a game of Changeling: the Dreaming.

  169. July 12, 2012 at 10:46 am

Because I’m #NotAtComicCon, on Thusday & Friday I shall heroically ANSWER ALL THE PHONES! SELL ALL THE INSURANCE! FILE ALL THE PAPERS! Then on the weekend, I can dial it back a notch — I will fabulously do the laundry & read a book. Can my life BE any more exciting??!? 😉

  170. July 12, 2012 at 10:46 am

Reading and contemplating if the Tardis ever needs a touch up coat of paint or sealant.

  171. Frank Newton
    July 12, 2012 at 10:46 am

As much as I’ve wanted to go to Comic-Con, I’ve never had an opportunity to go. This year is due to my new job as a corrections officer, and not having any vacation time established yet. Maybe next year. I’d love to see Tor Books revisit when I finally get to go, and dig into WoT theories with others.

I can say, however, that this week I will be helping establish some kind of future for the younger inmates in my correctional facility. Some of these guys have no one to encourage them to do better, and that’s kind of a new goal for me.

  172. July 12, 2012 at 10:47 am

For my third year anniversary, I’m going with my wife for a few hour drive to Illinois to eat Penn Station Subs, the best food in the world. Anyone going to ChiCon this year should look up the nearest Penn-Station. You won’t regret it.

  173. Clint Theede
    July 12, 2012 at 10:47 am

I am watching over our beloved puppies while my wife is “back home” visiting her Northern Irish family. I am also attempting to sell our house in preparation for moving into our new one, lots of work to do but always time to keep up on all things WoT!!!!

    July 12, 2012 at 10:48 am

This week is full of doctors and testing and then more doctors and testing. This coupled with work is my mountain to climb.

  176. July 12, 2012 at 10:48 am

Taking a post Afghanistan deployment road trip to the hallowed football geek lands of Chicago and Green Bay! Also will be spending bonding time with family, friends and beer.

  177. July 12, 2012 at 10:48 am

I’ll be busy creating a new person (7 months down, two to go!) and planning a baby shower with my best friend, plus I’m starting my second Masters class this week! In addition to all that I’m also working on a dragon-themed cross stitch for my little Peanut (since she is a dragon baby) and I’m re-reading the entire Wheel of Time series for the release of AMoL. I guess you could say I like to stay busy 🙂

  178. July 12, 2012 at 10:48 am

I will be saving lives… and finishing a re-read of Wise Man’s Fear. Gotta keep the nerd quotient high.

  182. Andrew Wilson
    July 12, 2012 at 10:49 am

By day I’ll be doing my day job slaving away in the heat pens that constitute the datacenter I work in. At night, well funny you should ask, by night I’ll be stalking through the shadows, creeping ever so slowly across dark fields, using a telescope to spy on the neighbors above me, identifying each one, and taking notes on where they are and what they’re doing. Carefully catalogging each movement. You might even hear me shouting at some poor sod to turn off a light so I can get a better view, or call a friend over to share in a particularly wonderful view. #Astronomy

  183. July 12, 2012 at 10:49 am

I’ll be trying to catch my 10-month-old daughter when she talks into my cellphone. It’s picture-worthy (and thus blackmail-worthy when she’s 12), and I hope she’s able to communicate with the angel standing next to her crib to ask him what his name is.

Getting up early, feeding the cats and reading in the cool morning air outside. #NotAtComicCon

  261. July 12, 2012 at 11:14 am

As you all enjoy the awesomeness that is San Diego ComicCon, I will spend the entire day trying to vomit words into a word document. I shall sit in front of my computer typing and typing away as I cackle madly and whisper Tor’s name in an effort to somehow magically deprive you guys of your will so that my book will never be rejected in the future. I swear, an aura shall cover me and bring down upon you guys a fervent desire to publish something by me.

In truth, I’ll just be sitting in front of my computer with the word document open and a cup of coffee on my side. I’ll stare at it for hours before I actually type anything and then when I do type something it’ll sound all wrong, so I’ll end up going on the internet to get distracted and at the end of the day, I will have typed 1,000 words that will later be edited out. And that’s what I’m doing while you guys enjoy ComicCon. Have a beautiful day.

  273. July 12, 2012 at 11:21 am

I have recently re-instated my minion status in the Henchman’s Local 97 Union office, so I will be sent to the labs of the fearsome Dr. Spatuula to resume work on mass produceable death-rays. He says we must be finished in time for the Mad Scientists meeting in a few weeks, plus meeting orders from before, and if we don’t then he will start vaporizing one out of every ten minions. Fortunately, he has yet to ban mp3 players on the production floor, so at least I won’t have to hear the screams of the slower minions deaths. Or I will be helping my friend build up stock prop guns to sell at the Salt City SteamFest in a few weeks, while jamming to some sweet tunes!

This will be our daughter’s first Con (she’s 10) and we are all geared up and ready to go. We’ll be keeping an eye on all of the excitement of ComicCon so that she can get a glimpse of what she could see at DragonCon, though. 🙂 Hope you guys have fun out there!!

I *am* Dr. Spatuula, (see comment #277), and I fully intend to crash this inane party known as SDCC, but only as soon as my addle-brained minions finally finish the very important step of FINISHING MY DEATH RAYS! At this rate, I’ll never be finished in time and will be forced to cancel the aforementioned crashing. They will be ready for Mad Scientists Unite! 2012 meeting, however – or I promise to downsize the minion department! Bwa ha ha ha!

Rather, no SDCC for me, though a few of my props will be there! Look for a few Commander Shepards around! We’ll be getting ready for SLC’s Steam Fest in the meantime.

We’re commenting on our daughter’s behalf, who’s a huge Scalzi _and_ Sanderson fan; she had exams when Scalzi was close by, sadly couldn’t make the signing. And she doesn’t even know this giveaway is happening, because right now she’s #NotAtComicCon because she is in Costa Rica, helping repair homes and build an access ramp to the church in a small village while practicing/ learning Spanish. So no #SDCC for her, even virtually; at best she gets sporadic online access about once a week. As for us (her parents), her absence lets us have a group of her friends over in stealth to plan her surprise birthday party, with a Dr Who/ Avengers/ Supernatural combo theme: We’re calling it “Super Who’s Assemble”. You should see the cake sketch! 🙂

    July 12, 2012 at 1:26 pm

This week, while #NotAtComicCon, I will be veryvery busy. I’ll be splitting my time between editing my friend’s online story (she’s incredible, it’s practically a novel!) and playing a frantic game of catch-up in my reread of some certain favorite books of mine (*wink wink*), because I just realized that I’m not going to be able to read for an entire month after a surgery I’ll be getting in August, and I know that’s going to set me WAY behind! So not a game of catch-up, I guess, but rather a game of catch-up-in-advance or preventing-the-need-for-a-game-of-catch-up-later. You get the idea! =)

Not that Comic con isn’t wonderful to behold in all it glory and passion, but I have a different god to conquer this week. I call this goddess of beauty pride and deceit, my master and lover, a hard week of overtime at work. I must admit that once i win these books the spoils of comic con will be nothing but a Childs dream, a past whim, for I will have truly served two masters, an accomplishment thought impossible… I’m always one for an attempt at the impossible.

  450. July 12, 2012 at 1:34 pm

I will be baking a cake for my sisters birthday and getting the house ready for her party!

  451. July 12, 2012 at 1:35 pm

I’m going to be the Dungeon Master for the d20 based WoT rpg. The party is just about to reach Falme and the party is hooked. We have an armsman of born in Shienar(who has distant blood ties to Hawking) who has taken the bond from a Green Aes Sedai as a warder in training. The green secretly knows of the blood line and raises him at a farm/school in Tarabon. A wander who was adopted by a Cairhien noble, but grew up with a wild streak they couldn’t handle so they sent him to the same “school.” Meanwhile they have taken another player who came in late captive because he is a Seanchan noble leading early attacks on Toman Head. If things go well, may post the Journals of the Seanchan noble 🙂

While switching back and forth between the offerings on Syfy and TNT, I’m spending my time filling out sweepstakes entry forms. Many of them. Since I am currently unemployed, I can’t afford to buy anything except the barest necessities. I must win them instead.

  684. July 14, 2012 at 1:49 pm

I was too busy keeping it nerdy in Orlando at a wizard rock show!

  699. July 15, 2012 at 12:05 pm

I am picking my son and a new kitten up from his science and animal camp and washing all the clothes he wadded up into his suitcase.

  700. July 15, 2012 at 12:07 pm

Instead of going to SDCC, I will be leading a familial voyage (meaning my father and I) across the East coast to several universities that interest me. I’m taking charge of my future! lol I’ll also be at my local library, enlightening other teens on new ya releases that I think they’ll really enjoy. I love helping out there the one day that I won’t be behind the wheel this week.

  701. July 15, 2012 at 12:08 pm

I am planning my crazy quilt workshops for Muse Con! I spent part of yesterday listening to music at Bastille Days drawing steampunk-theme embroidery stitches to use as a handout.

Today I’m braving the too-hot-in-the-summer attic to find my ribbon-winning Scraps costume from a past worldcon, so I can take some pictures of the patchwork and embroidery.

If you’re not doing anything the first week of August (or even if you are) come join us!

    July 15, 2012 at 2:19 pm

I was supposed to go to comic con. I was one of the first to get my tickets, I had plans to drive and I had a hotel reservation. Unfortunately, due to a problem with backstabbing friends and… girls, I was unable to go. I’m rather disappointed.
I could go into detail, but that would probably evoke a ‘tl:dr’.

So this weekend, I’m finishing Mistborn and generally just moping about how I just wasted $150 on a convention I was unable to go to.

During breaks from watching ComicCon on TV, I was out hunting Trollocs. The Dachshund security guards were acting like they had spotted some and I went out to check. I used my lawnmower in a methodical back and forth pattern over the entire yard. The Dachshunds must have taken care of them because I didn’t see any.

  853. July 3, 2013 at 4:07 am

I’m taking a 5 day weekend! I’m going to READ as much as I can! Literally going to lock myself away for at least 2 of those days – become a shut in and read read read. Then of course on the 4th I have to do the obligatory family fireworks function and hopefully watch a movie at the theater. Then of course back to reading reading reading!!! I refuse to get upset that I haven’t been able to get tickets to Comic Con for the THIRD YEAR IN A ROW that I’ve attempted it! I Promise NOT to give all of you who ARE going the STINKY HEX EVIL EYE *Tries hard to control herself from flinging flaming hexes at the masses of people who have tickets*…there’s always next year when I’ll try again. Have FUN!!!!

While #NotAtComicCon I’ll be packing up the kid to deposit at g-ma’s. Then the wife and I will enjoy a long childless weekend celebrating our anniversary. I could convince her to go to San Diego, but a B&B in the mountains is a pretty awesome alternative.
